  2. Can someone explain why this has been decided? Is it because of an external force?

    ReplyDelete
  3. That really is a shame.

Granted, some of the stuff being posted here was sketchy/silly, but a site like this also does some good.

One thing I've noticed as a regular reader here is the number of people who are very lonely and don't necessarily have people in their day to day lives they can reach out to. WTF-UW could be a refuge of sorts for them. The site also provided a forum for people to vent things that they might not say to even their closest friends. It might've helped these people in avoiding the feelings of depression, isolation, and despair that students at UW can suffer from.

Unfortunately there was also quite a lot of racism and sexism as well.

Regardless, thanks to the WTF-UW moderators. I got a lot of entertainment from your site.

    Cheers,
    LarryDavid

  4. why... you guys gotta give us a reason.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Say what?

At least give us some proper explanations! Some of us read this site religiously *ahem me ahem* >_>

    ReplyDelete
  6. I knew this was gonna happen eventually

    ReplyDelete
  7. Why?? :(
    No more WTF UW? :(

    ReplyDelete
  8. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

what if I promise to click on that linkbucks bs!?

    ReplyDelete
  9. LOL 6:06, i'm with you

I bet it's cause they found out we didn't vote for that bloody Jesse character

    ReplyDelete
  10. its probly the feds after seeing all the truth with regard to their representatives

    ReplyDelete
  11. this makes me sad. </3

    ReplyDelete
  12. yea i agree with larry david. The racism on this site was just disgusting.

    ReplyDelete
  13. A student at UW recently committed suicide. This site had people encouraging a student to do it, the same night it actually happened. You do the math.

    ReplyDelete
  14. This site has helped lonely people like me in a way :p. Mods, you've to give us an explanation of why you're stopping it -just so we'll know and people won't make false assumptions.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 7:42, from where did you hear the news?

    ReplyDelete
  16. yeah, this site helped quite a lot of people, i think. myself included. if someone was going to commit suicide, it'd take more than a few half-hearted trolls on some website to convince someone to take their own life.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm creating a new website. Need someone who knows HTML ASAP!

    ReplyDelete
  18. You're going to need more than HTML.

    ReplyDelete
  19. If someone actually did commit suicide that is so sad. I posted a comment on 'I'm going to kill myself' post saying it reminded me of "pump up the volume" where Christian Slater had a radio show and someone called in saying they were going to kill themselves and he encouraged him to do it thinking it was a joke and then the guy did it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I thought reading week was created to help reduce the number of university suicides.

    ReplyDelete
  21. can anyone confirm this happened?

    ReplyDelete
  22. wtf????!?!!?!?!??!?!?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Here is your confirmation.

Yes it did happen information can be found online if you know how to look properly. There was a memorial held recently. Please have enough sensitivity to not make this into an online production.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The reasons for stopping the site had nothing to do with anyone dying. Mods have no idea where you are getting this information.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think we'd all like to know the actual reasons then. If they're personal, just say so. It doesn't feel right that you'd shut this shit down with no explanation.

    ReplyDelete
  26. this site was not a catalyst to omguw's death...travis being lazy killed that site. wtf uw just picked up the slack.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Shit...i don't want to talk about my feelings with my friends or family, please don't go. I rather share them with hundreds of strangers, who might actually know me,or be my closest friends :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. lol nice job being sarcastic there, 9:27

    ReplyDelete
  29. If this project has become too great of a strain on your academics, open it up; let us help

    ReplyDelete
  30. ^ agreed. public moderation like fml could work.

    ReplyDelete
  31. =[ no way please don't shut wtfuw down it'd be the most depressing thing ever, how will i cope with midterms :/

    ReplyDelete
  32. Could you give the site to someone else who is willing to take care of it?

    ReplyDelete
  33. the suicide was a member of sigma chi frat correct?

    ReplyDelete
  34. where can we get memorial details?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Why is it shutting down?! Please let someone else take it!!! I'll do it! :(

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh, god, I didn't know about the student death. That is so incredibly sad. I wish I'd said something, anything...

    ReplyDelete
  37. @10:33 I believe you're correct, also @12:37 if I'm not mistaken the memorial was a few days ago.

    ReplyDelete
  38. frats suck. I'm glad waterloo is not affiliated with them

    ReplyDelete
  39. Whether or not frats suck is irrelevent to the fact that UW lost a student life recently. Show some respect to that fact at least.

    ReplyDelete
  40. in a weird way, i think wtf uw fosters a much needed sense of solidarity among uw students. it's the one place where people can share frustrations (and pointless anecdotes) while gaining different perspectives on uw from other students. and it's a fucking wicked procrastination tool. i'll miss you, wtf uw.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 3:40 is a troll. I would hope that members of Campus for Christ are a little brighter than that. Most likely, it's someone trying to make Campus for Christ look bad.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'd like to think 3:40 is a troll, however I have met a few people in Campus for Christ and would not be surprised in the least if it was a member.

    ReplyDelete
  43. ^ it's probably a troll, or else they wouldn't have felt the need to use the "Campus for Christ" sign-off as a shield

    ReplyDelete
  44. relax guys,

the mods are just probably MOVING ON with their lives, ever heard of that?

or do you expect them to moderate forever

and there is no money in it even with linkbucks

the site is not pupular at all... even UW library polls get way more votes then a 100-150 on this site

    ReplyDelete
  45. ^ you get what you put into it. as much as i like wtf-uw, the mods were not willing to do any active marketing of this website (as they wanted to stay anonymous) and only relied on its users. however they still found the need to use the most annoying way to pull in ad revenue with linkbucks, even though there isn't a huge readership and even though blogspot is free.

    ReplyDelete
  46. No, really, people who commit suicide go to Hell. It's the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  47. they see me trollin'...

    ReplyDelete
  48. -Campus for Christ.
If you have any issues with anything we've posted in this thread thus far, please meet us by the ML Tim Hortons to discuss. We will be campaigning and doing service in that area around 12:30pm Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  49. ^
You're not Campus for Christ. Sadly, not everyone has the smarts pick up on that. Stop trolling.

    ReplyDelete
  50. What is with the lack of details?? I'd really like to know!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Suicide is not selfish. It's what you do when there is nothing left.

You honestly believe that if you were gone, it would be better for everyone. You feel like the only way to stop the pain for everybody is to disappear. I've been there.

The guy in question was not selfish. If you don't know what it's like to be in the middle of a depressive episode - and you don't - then don't even try to talk about this, because you don't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The sidebar polls this week were pretty much the deciding factor. Mods have been seeing some fairly negative things going on in the comments recently and at this point WTF UW has grown so large that we really cannot properly moderate it. So the social experiment that is WTF UW is stopping.

    ReplyDelete
  53. ^i feel like i just got dumped by wtfuw

    ReplyDelete
  54. very responsible of you

    ReplyDelete
  55. I understand not being able to moderate it well enough, but don't base this decision on the sidebar polls.... if some people really think wtfuw does more harm than good then maybe they can just gtfo.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The polls are so inaccurate. I upvote the same choice many times just to skew the results :P.

    ReplyDelete
  57. At least you didn't pull a Travis and abandon the site with no explanation.

    ReplyDelete
  58. lol, what side polls? are you offended that some of us think one of you is a female? or is that most of us started reading in November?
Granted, have of the population said that this site does more harm than good but I can guarantee you most of those ppl are just being stupid because it's their nature and would not vote like that if the site's existence depended on it.
And as far as the site becoming too large, let us help! It's not like that T!m kid has anything better to do with his life.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'll miss this site but I respect that you are closing it because of the comments.

Sorry to be a "pussy", but the comments have been turning more and more OMGUWesque and alienating.

So thanks for maintaining this site and good luck with future projects.

    ReplyDelete
  60. yeah right!!

if I were the owner of the site, I would keep it running as long as it brings money - no matter how offensive or degrading the content becomes, no matter if anyone thinks "it brings mor bad than good", the moral stuff is all bullshit, income is the bottom line

I would STOP the website if it were NOT bringing any money.

Which is clearly the case here. Mods don't lie to us making up "moral" reasons!!!:))

    ReplyDelete
  61. What are you guys talking about? Why can't you just get more moderators?

    ReplyDelete
  62. 9:55 would also probably suck dick for money because it would be considered business. time to get some ethics. it's a respectable and ethical response to close this site because it's gotten too negative. it was only a matter of time.

    ReplyDelete
  63. LOL you close something on the internet because it got too negative? Grow a pair and deal with it. This is real life.

    ReplyDelete
  64. It has actually become a concentration of assholery. Most people wouldn't dare say some of the shit they say on this site under the guise of anonymity. This isn't real life, it's exaggerated and skewed to the side of negativity, racism and bigotry.

    ReplyDelete
  65. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flR5wWrKYhM
    NEED. TO. WATCH!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Guys, honestly, very very few of the WTFs have been anything close to dangerous... it's really important to realize that people are entitled to their own opinion whether or not it works with yours. If you think the site has gotten too negative, DON'T VISIT.

Also people should be free to post what they want, regardless of whether they would say it in real life (as long as it isn't dangerous... and someone saying they hate asians isn't dangerous.)

    ReplyDelete
  67. "someone saying they hate asians isn't dangerous"...what a well-thought phrase.

    ReplyDelete
  68. i miss you wtf uw :'( RIP
