WTF: Sometimes I wonder why I'm even studying theoretical concepts, and wonder why I don't just drop out and learn a skilled trade. Is this even going to pay off?

  1. Does it need to pay off? Can't you just learning for the sake of having knowledge? Does it have to be about money?

  2. Uh.. of course it's about money 6:47, are you kidding? You're investing something like $30,000. Besides you don't need to go to school to get knowledge. It's called books, if you really want to have knowledge read them, there's no point for you be here if that's all you care about! The only reason people go to university is to get a good job after graduating. Period.

  3. I know what you mean. Some skilled trade jobs make a ton and they don't require 4 years of school

  4. OP Here. 6:57 understands what I mean. I have friends who don't even go to university but attend university lectures just to learn. It's free, and they're learning what they want.

Instead of spending $30 000 and not make hardly any money over the span of 4 years, I could be doing a skilled trade and be being paid to learn, and probably be making $120 000 in those 4 years, as opposed to spending $30 000 and perhaps making less than the tradesman after 4 years of university education. So basically I could be out $150 000

Just a basic cost-benefit analysis. This obviously does not account for advancement opportunities, but there are still a fair amount in the skilled trades field

  5. No, your degree isn't worth it. Will this fad of everyone needs a university degree to be successful/happy/whateverthefuck please die so that the sleepy halls of the ivory towers can go back to being that.

I know I sound eliteist, I am. Can you dig it?

  6. You sound uneducated, not elitist.
Those beliefs reflects a trend of credentialism which will likely continue as consumer culture persists.

  7. I agree with 11:17 in some respects. the people who are just here cause mom and dad want them to be here should GFTO and do something they actually enjoy. 4 years is a long time to waste on someone else's dreams while ignoring your own.
the job seekers who just want to add stuff to their resume should be handed the paper and leave. Those of us who actually enjoy what they are learning, stay a bit here at UW, learn something and do what you really like, or get the skills to do what you love doing.
OP, if you want to be in skilled trades, go for it, but you won't last if you're just in it for the cash. if you do you'll be somewhere in 45 years time, wondering why you wasted your life for a paycheck and a fat bank account.

  9. It'll only pay off if you stop complaining and learn where to apply it.
