WTF: In the 4 years I've been here I have never connected with a single person. I have no real friends - ones that will actually reply to my calls and texts, or ones that want to hang out on the weekends. I will not miss this place or the people here at all when I leave. I hate most people that I meet. I wish I could rewind 4 years and never come here. The only thing I've got out of being here these years is a drug addiction, and even that is getting old and boring as of late. When I graduate I'm not even going to attend the ceremony, you can just mail me my diploma, thanks. I hope this post can serve as a warning to people who are thinking of coming here, and that the people I am referencing here will know deep down that it is me writing this. I would be quite happy if I never had to think again about this school or the people I've had to deal with here.

  1. That's fairly depressing, although life is what you make of it and everyone lives differently. I hope you become happier wherever life takes you next....

  2. People are going to give you a lot of shit for this but I agree 100%.

  3. hahahahahahahah NO WAY your just a looser! its the the school ITS YOU!!! I have TONS of friends at UW and ones that will last a life time!

  4. I feel really bad for you, I honestly do. I have already spent 4 years here, 1 more to go, and I know exactly what you mean. Although I am lucky enough to have made 2 or 3 friends that I really connect with, we're all busy, and at times when I'm alone and I have no one to call I really wonder if coming here was a good idea. I believe that 95% of life's experiences are what you make of it, but UW and its population really do not make it easy. Hang in there.

P.S. I'm willing to bet the previous poster is either a really lucky person, in denial, or most likely, a frosh or second-year student. I felt like I made many nice, real friends in my first few years too, but you realize the truth once you reach 3rd and 4th year.

  5. Except for the part about graduation, this reads a lot like a suicide note.

  6. Wow, that is just about the best advertisement for UW i've ever seen.

I think we can close all these WTF UW sites, we have one post to rule them all.

  7. I know exactly what you mean. I meet tons of people every term, but no one really special unless they are friends that came to UW with me.

It's hard to keep friends after 1st and 2nd year, usually because of coop.

People who have many close friends at UW are probably locals who are always around the area, if they are not the freshmen in denial.

  8. OP is my role model.

  9. i bet you're in engineering

  10. OP you rock man. Fuck waterloo and the students here. I made lots of "friends" here but I'm hella happy to be leaving this place after this year. A lot of people are fake over here at UW. There are too many people willing to sell their souls of a coop job or to do well here. I know sooo many people who steal exams, cheat on exams and lie to get a doctors note (I'm looking at all the brown people in the science faculty). People here are spineless pricks who don't give a fuck about real relationships. Fuck you waterloo for creating this environment!

  11. ^ good point. another problem with UW - lack of academic integrity.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm new to UW and I could predict my future in 4 years.
    OP best of luck

    ReplyDelete
  13. two questions to the op:
    1) why do you think anyone in this school cares (or should care) about you, or how you feel, or what you do?
    2) are you a sociopath?

    ReplyDelete
  14. ^ everyone should work for, and gain, a sense of belonging and caring relationships. why else do people exist in communities and carry out social behaviours?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I can't disageee fully to what OP says, but I've made a lot of friends here regardless if they're just partying friends or whatever. The truth of the matter is, post-secondary school is very transient - people come from many different distances for the same objective, and then generally go back or go very far from where they initially came from.

I honestly didn't know many people on campus until I began getting involved. My tip to first years, join your facultues student union, become an orientation week leader (you'll meet a ton of new friends if you're a cool person on this), get involved on commitees, sports teams if you're capable, etc.

I won't leave you with any cliche messages about life but I will comment that people at UW are generally pretty reserved. lectures aren't the best place to meet people. I haven't met many people at all in my lectures

    ReplyDelete
  16. My classes are pretty small, so I actually discovered that saying "hi" to someone is not that scary... and saying "what are you doing [tomorrow], we should go for coffee" is easier than you may think. life is not all doom and gloom - if you put in SOME effort, either by getting involved or just talk to the people around you - you'll be surprised! A lot of people, as seen on this site, are in the same boat, and they'd be happy if someone talked to them... all great friendships start out with small talk.

PS. OP, Maybe you should go talk to some professional... your post IS a little scary

    ReplyDelete
  17. yea I don't meet ANYONE in lectures. I would say the best way is to join a club. There are a lot of stupid clubs on campus. haha I joined the STEP club and I have NOOO passion for a "greener" society but hey, the girl recruiting was cute and I've met some people there. Not sure if I'll stay friends with them when I'm done school but hey, I got to know some people and now my social circle is a little bigger. OP, I really feel for you man. HOnestly, UW can be a really tough place but don't be hard on yourself man. Talk to some someone at counselling services perhaps? Honestly, I would've loved to met more friends on campus but it's really about what you take from the experience. OP you are not a lone - there are many who feel like you and trust me, I'm sure things will get better.

All you first year students (esp those in coop), be fucking prepared. 90% of your so-called friends will disappear next year and things will get tough. You think first year was hard? 2nd year is the weeding year - build up a social circle where you can spend time to relax. Join clubs and get involved. So what if the group is a goofy outing but hey, you might meet some interesting people.

Best of luck on the finals everyone!

  21. OP I feel for you.

  22. hello i am sexy boy will you frandship with me?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've always found the free hugs campaign to be a little disingenuous but I really feel that OP needs their service atm. Where the hell are you Free Hugs?

  25. OP man, keep your chin up. UW is horrible but you're graduating! There's so much out more there.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Maybe you should have made more of an effort. Most people have friends here, its not hard. I feel for you, but in a sense I don't. Because you have to make an effort. If not, its reasonable to expect that everyone will not like you. What a shame. I wish you good luck wherever and with whatever you do after you graduate!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm sorry to hear about that...

i hope things go better for you in the workplace, but i think they'd care less about you there

    ReplyDelete
  28. @ 9:39 pm - making an effort is extremely hard for some people. i make so much conscious effort to be nice when i meet people, i try my best to hold a conversation, seem approachable etc. but by the end of the day i don't really have anybody i could just hang out with. it could be because im socially awkward and when i'm worried i'll say something wrong (which is very often) i just decide to not say anything, hence seeming hard to talk to, but i make a lot of effort which is really hard for me

    ReplyDelete
  29. i think we should add a forum/message board to this website. it might actually be good for some people.

    ReplyDelete
  30. ^ that's a really good idea. maybe a chat room, since these WTFs already act like threads on a message board.

i'm not as down as OP is, but it'd be nice having the chance to feel like part of a community rather than a faceless number in UW.

    ReplyDelete
  31. yea i wish i'd gone to a smaller university.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I know how you feel OP, so you're definitely not alone. But at least you should be happy you're getting outta here. I have about two more to go. And I will not be going to my grad either, mainly because I'll be a loner there while everyone would be taking pics with their friends but aside from that i just can't wait to leave this place. The Admin, like SAFA are good, though, it's just the majority of students that suck. I tried talking to two people in one of my lecture and it seemed they weren't interested. But be happy you're almost out of here.

  33. UW is just a chapter of your life. A 4-5 year chapter, out of 80-100 years you may live.

This is the mindset that got me through high school. High school was horrible for me, but it was only 4 years of my entire life. I kept on reminding myself that I had the rest of my life to experience better. You have the rest of your life to experience better too.

These years are hard, but it is just ONE small part of your life.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I understand completely. It's not about "making an effort" - people don't really get it when they say stuff like that. If you're an introvert like me, it's hard to make friends at the best of times. And the environment at UW is one of the worst ones out there.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I hate when strangers talk to me in lecture...I am trying to learn during the lecture. It's fun before and after but when people make comments to me while the professor is talking...that really annoys me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. ^ If you're referring to the comment above "I know how you feel OP, so you're definitely not alone," I wrote that. Obviously, I wasn't talking about talking when the Prof's talking. People need to stop misreading things.

    ReplyDelete
  37. OP, i'm sorry, but i think you're simply unlucky

    ReplyDelete
  38. of course having friends and not being lonely is about making an effort. being an introvert doesn't absolve you from all responsibility, because that would rely on others being the active ones while you're being passive. imagine if everyone were an introvert; everyone would be loners! you just have to learn to make friends in your own, quiet and slow way, like i have. saying that, i was one of the posters early on in this thread - i definitely am going through what the OP and some of you are going through too, but i do realize it's not only because people in uw can be jerks.

    ReplyDelete
  39. CHEER UP BUTTERCUPS! :)
tomorrows a new day, and you have to the power to do whatever the fuck you want with it!
    isnt that a good feeling?

    ReplyDelete
  40. if only people were willing to express in the real world the empathy they've shown on this site

    ReplyDelete
  41. The problem with OP is that if you have issues finding friends in an artificial environment like academia, you're probably going to get absolutely crushed in the real world.

UW is a really innocent place with really innocent people for the most part. If you can't handle yourself at UW, I would hate to see how you handle yourself in the real world. The reality of this situation is that you're a candidate for suicide later in life. Seek serious counselling - not just UW counselling.

    ReplyDelete
  42. OP nailed exactly how I feel and should consider a career as a writer because reading that post felt like it was coming out of my own head.

Seriously well written and penetrating statement.

    ReplyDelete
  43. to poster 11:54pm - i agree with most of what you're saying, but that isn't really going to help OP. it's not really true either. elementary school kids are pretty "innocent" too, but everyone knows how cruel kids can be, when you're a kid too. people here in UW are naive, but doesn't necessarily stop them from being nasty/mean/apathetic/whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'll be your friend and I send you tonnes of hugz!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. 11:54 Here - Definitely agree with you 12:13

    ReplyDelete
  46. OP, keep that up! Hugs from this way as well!

    ReplyDelete
  47. ^ oh sorry,i meant to say "keep that chin up" :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. OP I will be your friend :).

    ReplyDelete
  49. OP I am sure there are a lot of people who would want to be your friend if only you meet them halfway. I find it hard to make friends or be totally comfortable with people I meet the first time, but it doesn't take me too long to warm up. Maybe it comes from being an international student because when I came to UW I literally did not know a single person here. Now I am extremely happy with the friends I made (residence helped a lot) and I am really looking forward to the rest of my life here at UW.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'll be your friend. =)

    ReplyDelete
  51. It's so encouraging to hear that I'm not the only one finding UW to be an isolating place...and to witness the empathy on this thread.
    Big ups to you all.

    ReplyDelete
  52. ^ I think most people have the power to be empathetic, if others just gave them the chance, or they let themselves take a step forward.

    ReplyDelete
  53. OP, come onto WTF UW live. You'll chat with some wonderful people there!

    ReplyDelete
  54. This sounds exactly like the years I spent at Brock. Except that was at BROCK, so I'm inclined to think I had it worse. Much worse.

  55. i dunno about wtf live now. Everyone one there seems like they're at a high school popularity competition.

  56. December 3, 2009 7:36 PM definitely said everything I wanted to. My first 2 years at UW were miserable. I never even went to class. Third year got better, I started volunteering. Fourth year was a blast and that's when I made most of my friends after getting involved in orientation week and other clubs/societies. I've graduated, live in the GTA, but still keep in touch with all my UW friends. Clubs day is coming up on the 14th and 15th. Join something. :) *hugs*

    ReplyDelete
  57. I do feel bad for you. It is what you make of it. I did have a lot of good back home friends come with me here my first couple years, but most have graduated and moved on. I am in my last term of my last year and have met more people in the last year at UW than the last 3. I used to live what I called a Laurier life, living and socializing with all WLU students, thinking the whole time that there wasn't many people to meet here. I was wrong. I know it is hard to meet people outside of class, but that is where getting involved comes in. Waterloo is so clicky that you are bound to fit in some where.
