WTF: Why is the slc giving space in the great hall to all these religious groups when the idea of religion goes against logical thought and reason which are the ideals that a university is supposed to promote? Take your ignorant bigotry elsewhere please.

  2. Yea dude, I actually cant believe you go to university. your ignorant mind seems much like a closed minded person. If you don't like that these groups are doing something constructive then go home. University promotes community living and THE CANDIAN TREND OF ACCEPTANCE and TOLERANCE. You sound american. I mean if you look into the mirror and think about how you feel you would realise your the problem with humanity today. What is so wrong about a religious group gathering in the slc to do their Business? Now your rebuttal might be "There religion is false and their wasting their time" Now yes that could be true, but that doesn't mean that they are ignorant. What is ignorant is that you cannot be a little accepting to accommodate those with different beliefs and desires then yourself. In the more extreme sense its been done before in history. Usually it ends in the massacre of many from different groups. Someone once thought about your idea and they ordered the murder of 6 million people. So before you go around with your prejudice ways y don't you do us all a favor and kill yourself before you grow up to do something horrible and illogical

  3. I fuckin agree with OP. I don't come to uw to get a religious education. GTFO.

  4. Nobody was trying to educate you, although arguably you seem to need to learn to be tolerant.
RELAX, its not like they harassed everyone in the great hall, trying to force their beliefs down our throats.
On the contrary they just had nice displays and information posted.

  5. op here

why do the same people that are here for a technical education so willingly believe in things that cannot be proven? do they understand that once they apply scientific reasoning and logic to religion that the entire concept falls apart? why does a so called institution of higher learning give these people any sort of platform when so many things that religions preach go against scientific progress?

people can believe whatever nonsense they want to, no matter how illogical. i just don't want that bullshit taking up space in a place where we are supposed to be advancing mankind's knowledge, not blindly following archaic rules that aren't even relevant in today's society.

  6. Dude our school has a religious studies program! You might not believe in religion but that does not mean that everyone shares your beliefs, in fact religion has shaped the world we live in today. Understanding different perspectives and the world around us helps us grow as a society. Also get a life...

  7. I have to agree with the OP here.

I realize there are religious studies programs but the majority of people here are in math, eng, science or something like that.

It's interesting the first time you see the displays, but after they've been there for 3 days, I start to get pretty annoyed.

  8. I'm a complete atheist through and through, but the sooner you realize people are allowed to believe what they want to believe in, the better off we will all be. Don't like it? Start an atheist booth to educate people on the obvious bs behind religion. Don't want to do anything? Just walk past, fuck. No one is forcing you to believe anything.

  9. I maybe can't prove my beliefs or the beliefs of others to you, however, can you scientifically prove that we're completely wrong?

    The fact is, you can't.

I know this because I have been to many lectures and debates that represent both sides of the argument and there is never a conclusion. NO one has the answers to the BIG questions.

    Education is what university promotes.

Maybe you should have taken some time to look at a FREE exhibit and educated yourself.

  11. 5:13 so true. In my catholic highschool we were required to learn about other major religions. I've talked to some people who are muslim and some jews, they both don't know shit about catholicism. Yet I can tell you all about the Five Pillars of Islam.

  12. @5.13

And.. not true. I'm atheist, but I get Christianity shoved in my face more than I care for.

  13. OP here.

No, 4:16 did not nail it.

If you say that there is a limit to human knowledge then it is a self-imposed limit. And you are the idiot for limiting yourself like that and religion is just a convenient idea for your side because you can just say that whatever we don't know must be governed by some higher power that we aren't aware of. That is such a cop out.

The reason that we don't have complete understanding of the universe is because our science and technology hasn't advanced far enough for us to measure the universe in terms we understand. Surrendering your life to some unprovable higher power just because you've decided to stop exploring our physical reality is pathetic and you shouldn't be in university. Maybe the vatican is hiring.

Religion is an easy way out for a lot of people but people should instead be looking for logical answers to their questions through scientific reasoning - not some ridiculous idea of some higher being controlling everything. You are ignorant.

  15. I'm as atheist as they come, but I enjoyed the display in the SLC today. They had some beautiful art on display, and no one was pushy or trying to engage me more than I wanted.

It's better than the BS blue chairs that FEDS put up. University is expensive, but not unnecessarily so. The debt load isn't unmanageable.

And besides, the best way to eliminate religion (other than ignoring it), is to engage its adherents with science and critical thought.

  16. As an atheist, I'm quite fond of learning about religion. It's total rubbish, but in the end, it's knowledge and even a laugh.

  17. OP @ 7:14, seriously. What year are you in?

I'm saying that, for example, even when all scientific processes and means and methods and trains of thought call something "true", it will be "true" in some limited context - usually the one you noted of the limited ability of the human being to fully comprehend not necessarily yet-to-be-discovered facts, but the very nature of reality.

You put words in my mouth by saying I would automatically defer to a 'higher power' at this point, and frankly that proves your limited comprehension of the scenario. I stated some *philosophy* would take over - that most people's philosophy will take on a religious nature is coincidental, not automatic.

Scientific logic and reason governs a limited context, but you're absurd for trying to apply it to a context where it has nothing to say. By comparison, you're (rightly) frustrated with the situation where people might try to override logic with abstract philosophy where it has no place. Unfortunately, you're not self-aware enough to realize the parallel.

  18. "I maybe can't prove my beliefs or the beliefs of other to you, however, can you scientifically prove that we're completely wrong? The fact is, you can't."

Actually, we can. Because if God created the world in seven days or whatever other bullshit you want to believe, how do you explain evolution?
And don't even try to tell me you don't "believe" in evolution. It's not something to believe in or not believe in. It is fact.

All the available evidence points to the nonexistance of any god. When's the last time you saw God descend from the heavens? When did you last see a 'miracle'? Now contrast that to all the stuff that suggests there is NO god - children murdered, massive earthquakes, George Bush for goodness's sake... what kind of God would let that sort of shit happen?

So no, I can't tell you that there is DEFINITELY not a god, but I can tell you that according to all available evidence and logical thinking, there's a very good chance that there isn't. Why don't you try to "prove" that God exists?

  19. Hey 10:13, I think OP is so ignorant that not even a university education is likely to help him/her. (Assuming OP is not a philosphy or related major.)

  20. @ 11:46PM - wow, it's good to see that you at least went to your first few lectures of Biol 359.

OP is an embarrassment to the faculty of Science, in my opinion. I hope others don't think that we are all this intolerant and hateful. I'm a science student, no I am not religious, but I think it's disgusting to attack others for their beliefs regardless of what I have learned through nearly 4 years in a biology program.

  21. 2:41AM here, I'm saying OP is ignorant not because of OP's "intolerance" or anything like that but because of OP's claims about "logical thought and reasoning"...definately not a philosophy or math major.
