  2. So any country who cuts down mass amounts of trees deserves to experience an earthquake that kills thousands?

Thanks 4:03, your post was so enlightening.

  3. Sounds like Canada and USA are also in for a disaster.

I think it's worthwhile; acheive good political standing, help a country, reaffirm status as a "helping country" as opposed to war mongrols in Iraq

  4. 4:57, ok, so there will be some political gains for Canada and the U.S, but i don't think they're doing it simply because of that, but because people do genuinely care. And so what, Cuba has always been a poor country and it has to take an earthquake for people to help, but they are and that's what counts. And if you've forgotten Canada's GG is from Cuba and definitely has been affected by this, so i'm sure that gives Canada an even bigger reason to aid, besides the fact that the country does care in the first place.

what bothers me is that when an earthquake happened in Pakistan most of the people here didn't know about it. But now all of a sudden Haiti is a big deal? WTF?

  6. @6:09pm, there are over 100 earthquakes a year. We, the general public, hear about a tiny tiny fraction of those that are high on the Richter scale.

    http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eqlists/7up.html

In 2005, there were apparently 11 other earthquakes 7.0+ besides the one in Pakistan. I definitely don't remember hearing about 11.

My point is, even if it's the only one that we hear about or everyone's concerned about, the LEAST we can do is help out one disaster torn area.

  7. Canada and Haiti are two of only a few countries in the western hemisphere where French is an official language.

Canada is home to the third largest Haitian diaspora in the world (after the Dominican Republic and the U.S.).

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and one of the poorest in the world, despite being only a few hours away from us. Pakistan is on the other side of the world.

Pakistan, in 2005, was lead by Musharraf, who came to power in a military coup, and consolidated his power by amending Pakistan's constitution, and forcing judges to take oaths promising to support his rule.

Canada has a historical link to Haiti, as one of its chief supporters and provider of peace keepers and police training.

Haiti's earthquake affected the nation as a whole significantly greater than Pakistan's did.

Haiti is being supported by MINUSTAH, a UN coalition. Pakistan is generally weary of international influence and involvement.

...So yeah, there's a few reasons.

and even if something did happen, there is no doubt in my mind the us would be all over that, not to mention every other part of canada

  12. @6:52 .. pakistan was just an example.. don't you think its unfair to does other countries who go through shit too but don't receive any help? i never said i dont feel bad for Haiti or i won't help, but the fact that the media is giving Haiti so much coverage just because it is closer seems biased imo

  13. Honestly, I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to send help to Haiti.

It's getting too much media attention therefore it's annoying, bias, and why the hell would anyone consider helping?

Because it's getting so much attention it's hard not to be aware of it and so, while ignorance may be bliss when it comes to the other huge earthquakes happening, that awareness makes us all morally responsible to consciously decide to either act or not act.

IF you don't care, then fine - you will obviously be choosing not to act (or in the case of some dipshits, start to complain about other people helping and proclaiming your indifference?!)

If you are affected by human suffering that is all over the news, then you may feel compelled to act.

To those of you in the later category, you probably heard about the text to donate campaigns going on. One number for the Canadian Salvation Army is 45678. Text HELP to that number and you will receive a confirmation text - simply reply that you do want to donate 5$ and it's done. I think Roger's might have set up their own number, but I'm on Telus and that's what happened.

if anything it's not surprising that many of you are unconcerned - traditionally the highest amount of aid is sent from the poorest and lest amount of people, and many of you were probably not raised to believe in charity.

And why argue with you? You shouldn't be guilt tripped by other people, no one can force you to care, however it's embarrassing to be announcing how much you are annoyed by the disaster

  14. @ 6:13 PM - the aid is helping the survivors not the dead
