WTF: Waterloo has taught me many things. The most important being that I am incapable of any human connection; like, I am a fucking ghost to the world. The second being that no matter what happends to you, no one will actually care; people will say they will, but they're just looking for another person to accept them. The third is how to be an alchoholic; drinking to the point of memory loss daily just so I don't have to deal with the previous day is now a nightly ritual. The fourth that people would rather hide who they are and lie to me, then show me the real them. There are so many more important lessons this place has taught me. But whatever for now. Oh Also for all the Frosh now and to come. Waterloo will ALWAYS lie to, that whole "Your Coop counts as EIT experiance" bullshit? Yeah, good luck getting all the paperwork done. (That's if Waterloo even mentions the paperwork to you).

  1. I've made peace with the fact that, at least for me, university hasn't been so much a faculty of greater knowledge as much as it has been an experience that totally destroyed my ego and put everything into perspective, IE how inherently terrible most things are.

What still frustrates me are the people who say university is the four best years of their lives and/or a learning experience; I outright object to university being a positive experience, and whatever you learn one semester tends to get purged from your mind the second you finish writing your final because very few university professors actually know how to teach. The complaints could go on, but they're tangential. Don't stress this shit, we aren't the first generation to get burned by university (though probably not quite to this degree before).

  2. Sorry to be harsh, but life really is what you make of it. If you don't like it, change it, you have the power over your own life.

Don't like university? Maybe it isn't for you. Why not look into other paths of life that are available for people without a university degree? (Trust me, there are many people without university education who have been very successful).

Friends stabbed you in the back? Get new ones. Or don't get any. Give people a reason to put vested interest in you, and the right people will.

  3. University so far has been the best experience of my life.

It helps that I'm a varsity athlete, but joining a club or society really does help; you make friends with people who have similar interests.

Sure Waterloo screws us over hard. All universities do.

  5. I hear ya OP. I've allowed myself some moments of weakness like this but am slowly dealing with the fact that people will always be cynical towards you if and until you can prove why they should give two shits about you.

Sure, it's important to be "self-sufficient", but if you're able to not be another modern-day cynic, I gotta give you some respect. There's already so many of them here, which is why trust and having genuine friendships are common issues for us.

Who really feels welcome in a place where people ridicule each other for every mistake/flaw? The need to hide our real selves comes from the need to avoid some of that ridicule. I mean, almost every post here have people attacking each other's character as if it's their business. The only time people seem to give a shit is when they're criticizing you.

Just be active and try to be as well-rounded as possible. Agonizing over some tragic credibility will ruin you.

  9. OP, I felt pretty much the same thing towards high school. Now I'm in university and it's the best thing that's ever happened to me. People strive during different times of their lives.

  10. Guess what? No one wants to be friends with a depressed alcoholic. Go get some therapy and maybe people will want to talk to you.

  11. The fact is that you will have 1 or 2 close friends and relatives who really give a shit about you.

    The rest dont.
that's a fact most people have come to live with.

  14. Nobody cares about you, because, well, everyone is too busy caring about themselves... Like you, for example. Good luck with that.
