WTF: islam display at the slc: has a muslim ever picked up a christian pamphlet to learn more about christianity? seriously, i'm curious about this one-way religious education at UW.

  1. Yes, actually I am Muslim & I have read the Quran, the Bible, the Psalms and the Gospel. I have read most versions of the last 3 holy books. I have read some holy books of other religions & I'm still working on it.

You would be surprised by how closely those four books are related, and how closely those religions are related.

I went to a catholic all girls school for all my life before university because my parents liked the discipline. So I went to church on some Sundays (it wasn't forced upon anyone, I did it because I loved it!) and I went to the mosque on Fridays. I love all religions, they all literally preach the same basic things.

And you don't need to worry about the one-way religious ed at UW because most of the world was colonized by British/Spanish/French (etc) and most of them tried changing the colonized country's religion because it wasn't civilized enough so that's where christian missionaries came in. Christianity was taught but if people didn't believe in it, it was forced upon people. I'm pretty sure most of the world, not just Muslim people, know a lot more about Christianity than you think.

I have traveled to so many places people are eager to learn about different kinds of religions. I don't understand why there are so many illiterate, ignorant, narrow minded people in UW.

  2. WOW!
OP, you are owned with the previous comment.
I would just like to add that the people that live here inevitably get acquainted with the Christian Religion without even trying (this being a mostly Christian country and all, you know) so it is good that we get to learn about other religions that are not represented. I am an agnostic but I still enjoy learning about other religions and I agree with the previous poster that they have many commonalities. I also admire the way that this previous post was conducted. It wasn't insensitive but it was very informative.

  3. I am not muslim but I am frequently nagged by God bothering christians on and near campus. Curious to see how the OP arrived this "one-way" business.

  5. "Take your Western bullshit elsewhere."
I really love meeting new people from different backgrounds, but as a Canadian who's family has lived here many generations (obviously not before the Natives), I am really getting annoyed by all the international students that come here from abroad to study but have nothing but negative things to say about Canadian culture. Yes it snows, yes Waterloo can be a boring town, but if it is so unbearable, why can't you get a comprehensive accredited education in your own country? I mean I welcome you here, I am glad you have sun and sand maybe in your country, but if you're just going to piss and moan, maybe you should consider going back and building up your own educational institutions to the standards we have here, then you can maybe say something worth while. I love what Waterloo has to offer in terms of diversity, but that vast mix of different backgrounds certainly doesn't do much in the way of creating a sense of community or identity, other than just being completely different. I won't weigh in on religion because I am an atheist, which to many believers is a dirty word that invokes terms such as infidel, sinner, and so on. I view myself as someone who hasn't been convinced by the arguments of others. Maybe if you sold a story I could actually believe, then you would be able to persuade me into aligning with your beliefs, but the more I seek out and learn, the less I am convinced. I will admit the underlying values are for the most part positive and have done much for societies around the world, but there comes a point where you need to critically think for yourself, and I think most never give that a chance. They just hop on a cause and wave their flag as high as they can.
