WTF: Why do philosophy students think they are intellectually superior to everyone else? What can one do with a philosophy degree anyway?

  1. How do you define intellect, anyway? Aren't we, as humans, the ones who invented this measurement of yet another immaterial aspect of a personality? Who's intelligent, who isn't... what does this mean? And why does it matter? Better yet, why SHOULD it matter?

  5. Philosophy one of those degrees where the person has to actually be quite intelligent to perform in the classes.

I think people who major in Philosophy could major in a lot of things other than Philosophy and do great

  6. but yes, a rather useless degree in the workplace, but it might just save your life one day, and it's difficult to put a salary on someone's life

  9. I don't get it. Why major in philosphy when you know you're not going to have a career from it? Do you just plan on doing a masters in something useful? Otherwise, you could study all the philosophy textbooks for leisure or have taken a minor

  10. What's stupid is how the person above here doesn't realize that you could get a job with ANY university degree.

Many office positions require at least a university degree- doesn't matter what major. As long as you have a 4-year undergraduate degree, it is proven that you can do any kind of entry office work. If people aren't picky with their careers and are just happy working in an office, why not major in something you enjoy while you earn the required undergraduate degree?

Also, it's not all about money. Believe it or not, some people go to university primarily for personal enjoyment...

  11. Why would anyone want to get a degree just to work in an office? I'll stay in school for as long as I have to just to avoid working in a cubicle.

  12. 9:00 here,

Me too...I would hate to work in an office. However, some people don't mind.

Some people are just perfectly happy with working in an office. For instance, a few of my cousins majored in humanities and now they're just working ordinary office jobs. They are paid decent wages, and can earn advancement through senority and experience. Although they are doing nothing related to their majors, their statuses as university graduates proves that they are capabile of responsibility, time management, synthesizing information, and writing coherently. All the skills they gained with their "useless arts degrees" are required and essential skills for their occupations.

Even material from your "useless" major can help you land a job. For instance, many employers prefer to hire social science students because they are culturally/socially sensitive and were taught to think outside the box.

Lastly, choosing a "useless" major and earning good marks shows that you are committed and actively engaged in something, and are capable of extending this mindsight to the workforce.
