why doesn't sound fm sell advertising space on the air rather than looking to students for funding?

  1. So when you listen to the campus radio, do you always want to hear ads for whatever laser surgery or pizza place that's advertising?

    Yeah, don't think so.

  2. I kind of agree with OP. I don't even own a radio.

  3. for me...it's a 2.50 (shitty) tim hortons coffee...for them, it's something great to put on their resume that will help their possible career choice? Or support a great hobby?

  4. I'm all for supporting them. I'm just think that they may need to look into other options. Unfortunately some people really like their Tim's.

  5. well OP, that's because they seem to think that since they've been around for 30 years they're entitled to a student fee.

and it's blatantly obvious that their plan for recovering money after students voted to take away their fee was to ask them again with a new brand.

it's still the same shitty radio station, just under different more student friendly management.

  6. In case you didn't know, they do sell ads. They are actually legally only allowed to play a couple of ads a day.

And if you think it's a shitty station, you know you can refund your fee or get involved with the place right?

  8. Actually, student radio is a good thing.

Laurier is starting their own soon, and UofT, Ryerson, and York seem to be doing pretty well with student radio.

  9. "doing pretty well" how?
    "good thing" how?
    How is this determined?

It's not like I would boycott Waterloo's radio station and listen to another university's... they would just have to make it more entertaining than other things I could listen to, except the other things are free, online, and available on demand.

  10. The arguement that students no longer own radios is irrelevent...you can listen online and there are podcasts available.

If you don't like what they play, email them and indicate what you're interested in hearing. People can't read minds, the only way to make something better is to voice your concerns. Personally, a lot of the shows they have fit my interests and musical taste so I enjoy listening to them.

  11. "And if you think it's a shitty station, you know you can refund your fee or get involved with the place right?"

Well allow me to retort. If students actually wanted the station, they would have opted in to paying the membership fee and they wouldn't need to assess a fee. I could start a potato awareness club on our campus and charge a $5 membership fee. I could then say well every student should be aware of potatoes and start a petition to create a fee to support my club. I could then not get anywhere near enough signatures and plea with FEDS who already is doing 2 other referenda to run mine anyways. Oh and it's all fine and dandy because anyone who doesn't care about a potato club can make a trip to go out of their way to get the money back that FEDS shouldn't have collected in the first place.

People who vote in favor of the radio tax are stupid.

  12. Are they actually going to be putting on a live stream and podcasts online?

  13. They already do that. They do stream online.

The worse thing that goes if the referrendum fails is so many years of music built up in the station gets auctionned off.

Vinyl and CDs from the past god knows how many years, just wasted like that. If the referendum fails, the University should acquistion all that music and send it to Stratford and the media campus.
