  1. My ex bf is an engineer. They tell the story during the ceremony.
Don't quote me, because it's been almost 3 years since he told me the story.

Engineers have an iron ring to remind them of their responsibilities, and how many lives can be lost even from the smallest mistake that can be overseen.
The reason it is "iron" (they don't make the ring out of iron anymore) is because of an iron bridge that collapsed due to an engineer's miscalculation. Thus why the iron ring is a constant reminder.

    ...something like that.

  2. From ironring.ca:
"The ring symbolizes the pride which engineers have in their profession, while simultaneously reminding them of their humility. The ring serves as a reminder to the engineer and others of the engineer's obligation to live by a high standard of professional conduct."

  3. Adding to the first two, the ring is supposed to remind us to take great care with the shit we do because some douche back then made a bridge out of iron and it fell apart.. then they rebuilt the bridge with some more iron and it broke again (true story)

  5. @12:06 They used to way back in the day. Those rings are still around, but they're hard to come by.
