WTF: Coming to university has actually made me more religious.

  1. That's not surprising. There's a polarization hypothesis that says that people who were reared in a deeply religious home will likely become more religious as they enter early adulthood, and people who were reared in a less religious home will likely move further away from the religion in early adulthood.

My studying for the psych 231 test is actually paying off!

  2. ^ Yeah, that seems about right.

I was reared in a strictly non-religious home and continue to be apathetic towards religion, and annoyed at its distortion to promote bigotry and ignorance.

  3. Me too! I find my self yelling "Jesus H. Christ" and "oh God" a lot more often since I started uni.

  4. ^ What does that have to do with being religious? Saying "Oh my god" and
"Jesus Christ" as an expletitive is cultural, not religious in nature. An atheist may use those phrases because they are prevalent in Western culture.

  5. ^ I think he is joking...as in some people think merely going to church makes them a better person. But forget what "god" really represents.

  6. it's made me less religious. it's pretty easy to be religious as a child because whatever your naive notion of the world, it never really gets adequately tested. university is the first time i've dealt with people on tangible terms, and if this represents the best and brightest of society, there can't possibly be a god

  7. 6:02:

My exact feelings, given the miserable failures that human beings are, what kind of god would have created them?

It's a pretty convincing argument for atheism.

  8. I agree with OP to the extent that my personal faith has gotten stronger and more solid, but this place and its people can be soul crushing to anyone who dares to show an opinion outside of the "you must be stupid to believe in God" line of thought. I'm afraid to tell anyone now who I am.

  9. Children like to be supervised by adults. "Look at me! Watch this! I can do this! No hands!" It validates them and shows them they are there because someone else is watching over them.

Adults are the same, which is why you end up with all the big religions wasting so much money on churches/temples/general-bullshittery that is just saying "Hey God, look at me! Look at me!!!!"

  10. 10:55 again. Should clarify I am not atheist, but would just be ashamed to be associated with the hypocrisy of pretty much all the main religions.
